The Top 10 Car Coupons for Small SUVs in NJ

We ranked the Top Ten Small SUVs for mileage and price. We came away debunking the myth, “you get what you pay for.”  Each of these ten small SUVs deliver exceptional mileage for great prices.

When you look at All small SUVs we quickly found that having the highest MPG doesn’t mean much.  For example, the front-wheel-drive (FWD) version of the Lexus 450h hybrid  has the best MPG but is number three in terms of price.  It costs over $46,000 just to get started.  Add in extras and you are well into the $50,000 range.

We didn’t rank some idealized manufacturer model.  We went to New Jersey’s top dealers and took their best small SUVs off the lot.  They showed how willing they are to deal by giving between 9% and 19% deal savings.

The Mazda CX-5 has the best MPG rating, a Beginning MSRP price of $21,395 and Wow!’s highest overall rating.  At the bottom of the list is the Kia Sportage with $21,600 MSRP and 25 MPG.

Winner’s Snapshot – The Mazda CX-5

The Mazda CX-5 took the #1 ranking in our small SUV mileage and price contest.  The Lexus GS 450h hybrid gets a combined 30 MPG but costs twice as much.  How did Mazda take the #1 ranking?  This winner uses front-wheel-drive and manual transmission to deliver an amazing 35 MPG on the highway and 29 MPG combined.  The Mazda CX-5 is fun to drive with its manual transmission.  It starts at $21,395 and costs a modest $201 per month to drive an estimated 20,000 miles per year.

  • 4 Cylinder/2.0-Liter Engine
    • Manual 6-spd transmission/FWD – 26 city / 29 combined / 35 highway MPG

Editors Summary of All Reviews

We reviewed six reviews of the Mazda CX-5 and it is clear this car deserves our #1 rating.  The Mazda CX-5 has it all.  Keep in mind it is what it is – a terrific modesty priced, high mileage small SUV.  It is not a big SUV.  It is not a luxury SUV.  It is a terrific small SUV that gets top mileage and has a great price.

US News

Likes the CX-5 handling. They don’t give enough credit for its category leading MPG.  Their biggest knock is power on hills but hey, if you live in the mountains this is NOT the car for you. US News talks about the basic interior but for $21,395 you aren’t buying luxury.  This is a great car for families on a budget. @USNewsCars.

Kelley Blue Book

Kelley Blue Book agrees with US News that the CX-5 handling is terrific which makes it fun to drive.  KBB gives the CX-5 credit for its category leading MPG win. @KelleyBlueBook.

Automobile Magazine

This review is fairly standard but puts emphasis on the Mazda’s CX-5 handling and fuel-economy. @AutoMobileMag.

Popular Mechanics

Popular Mechanics loves the CX-5.  Their only knock is the 4 cylinder power plant.  Definitely not a hard accelerating sports car.  But what do you expect with a 35 MPG rating.  @PopMech.

Cars.com

The Cars.com review is vanilla pudding.  Still it acknowledges that the 2014 Mazda CX-5 has more power than in the past, great fuel economy and an overall fantastic value. @CarsDotCom.

TrueCar

TrueCar says there is a high certainty you will pay $23,427.  We say TrueCar isn’t digging deep enough. Compare the TrueCar price to NJCarCoupon.  NJCarCoupon delivers the very best deal with $3,200 in coupon discounts. @TrueCar.

Editors Summary of All Reviews

We review six reviews of the Subaru CrossTrek and in our opinion this car comes out a winner.  We ranked it #2 in our Small SUV Mileage Top Ten and these reviewers seem to agree.

US News

US News knocks this #2 rated small SUV MPG leader because it has less room than rivals and its underpowered engine. We say to the reviewers “give me a break.”   It has standard AWD, handles well, and has great fuel economy.  This isn’t a Denali with 8 cylinders or a six cylinder Ford Explorer.  It is a small SUV with great mileage.  Stop dribbling words and platitudes about this small SUV’s lack of a nuclear engine, low radiation emission, proton injected steering.  This is a great car.  @USNewsCars.

AutoTrader

The AutoTrader review is a bit confusing in that it wanders into talking about the Impreza hatchback, Forester or Outback.  Overall they like the Subaru CrossTrek.  We wish reviewers talked like normal people.  Just say it, “hey we like this Crosstrek when you are talking cost, MPG and overall package.  No package is perfect but what is.”  Except the fantasy car in reviewers heads.  @AutoTrader_com.

Left Lane

Left Lane goes all in on the CrossTrek’s handling, engine efficient and interior looks.  Good review. @LeftLaneNews.

Consumer Guide

Here’s what’s weird, Consumer Guide touts the generous cargo and interior room.  Weird because US News says the opposite.  Media is hard to believe. Same car with two different reviewers.  We say, “Drive it” and decide for yourself.  It is worth a Saturday afternoon if you are looking for a small SUV.  @CGAutomotive.

AutoWeek

We hate the AutoWeek review because they give the CrossTrek an underhanded putdown by saying, “For Subaru die-hards, it’s a no-brainer.” The CrossTrek is for anyone who is looking for a good-to-great small SUV.  @AutoWeek.

Motor Trend

Motor trends LOVES the Crosstrek.  They tell it like it is, excellent car for the money, size, and functionality. @MotorTrend.

The Buick Encore earned its #3 MPG ranking for small SUVs.  It is fuel efficient and delivers luxury.  The Encore is clearly the most luxurious, fuel efficient small SUVs around.  Its price is a sweet for what it delivers.

  • 4 cylinder/1.4-liter engine
    • Auto (S6) transmission/FWD – 25 city / 28 combined / 33 highway MPG
    • Regular Gasoline

What Makes This Particular Buick Encore a Great Deal?

This specific Buick Encore comes with a $700 coupon discount off MSRP plus all other dealer and manufacturer savings and rebates.  As you and every car buyer knows it’s all the other hidden costs that jack up the final price.  Hold on!  This Buick Encore is one of a kind because our dealer partner has added another $2,850 in additional coupons.  When you total the coupon savings up you have $3,550 in savings.  Your final deal beats TrueCar and everyone else on the final deal.  The sweetener on this Buick Encore is that the dealer knows his competition and he is willing to seriously negotiate.

Editors Summary of All Reviews

We review five reviews of the Buick Encore and in our opinion this car comes out a top pick.  We ranked it #3 in our Small SUV Price and Mileage Top Ten and these reviewers concur.  All the reviewers agree that for the price, mileage and interior comfort the Encore is a winner.  A couple of reviewers knocked the cargo space.  We say, “The Encore is not for a big family going on long trips.”  Don’t try to overstuff your family into the small SUV Encore.  If you want a bigger cargo space then consider the Enclave.  If you like a good price, value, MPG and comfort we think you’ll LOVE the Encore.

US News

The US News writers like the Encore’s great fuel economy and interior.  They don’t like the acceleration and small cargo space.  We don’t quite understand what the reviewers don’t understand, the Encore is a small SUV it is going to have a small cargo space and you can’t have great acceleration in a car this size when you have a four cylinder engine. The Encore, as do most small SUVs, has terrific safety ratings.  What they love is the Encore’s active noise cancellation system which makes the Encore a dream to ride in.  This car is NOT noisy.   It is quiet.  @USNewsCars.

Edmunds

Edmunds, like everyone else, likes how the Encore looks and its top ranked MPG.   For some reason Edmunds recommends its competitors like the Ford Escape for road trips.   Jeez, we recommend the opposite because the Ford Escape is noisy.  No comparison with the Encore.  If you have a big family then think about the Enclave which is super luxurious but nasty on mileage.  Quiet as a cougar on a night stalk.  @Edmunds.

Kelley Blue Book

KBB likes the Encore for mileage, luxury, interior comfort.  They are realistic in calling it like it is…a great small SUV. @KelleyBlueBook.

Automobile Magazine

Automobile Magazine likes the Encore price and value.  They agree with Edmunds about space compared to the Escape.  We think there are trade-offs but the Encore comes out ahead. @AutoMobileMag.

AutoBlog

Didn’t get this wordy white bread review.  Overall the review is positive. @TheRealAutoBlog.

The Mitsubishi Outlander Sport garnered the #5 spot on our Top Ten of Small SUVs for mileage and price.  It is basic with a manual transmission, gets 27 combined MPG, and comes with front wheel drive.  If you like paddle shifters you’ll love the Outlander Sport.

  • 4 cylinder/2.0-liter engine
    • Auto (AV-S6) transmission/FWD – 24 city / 27 combined / 31 highway MPG

What Makes This Particular Mitsubishi Outlander Sport a Great Deal?

This specific Mitsubishi Outlander Sport comes with a $500 coupon discount off MSRP plus any other additional dealer and manufacturer savings and rebates.  As you and every car buyer knows it’s all the other hidden costs that jack up the final price.  Hold on!  This Mitsubishi Outlander Sport is one of a kind because our dealer partner has added another $1,350 in additional coupons.  When you total the coupon savings up you have $1,850 in savings.  Your final deal beats TrueCar and everyone else on the final deal.  The sweetener on this Mitsubishi Outlander Sport is that the dealer knows his competition and he is willing to seriously negotiate.

Editors Summary of All Reviews

We summarized five reviews of the Outlander Sport and came to the conclusion that most reviewers compared it to an ideal model that has luxury, low price, great MPG, superior handling and a hot date who loves how you drive.  The Outlander Sport is exactly what it is presented as:  a small SUV with a starting price under $20,000, gets great mileage and is relatively comfortable.  It doesn’t have the Encore’s luxury or its starting price.

US News

The reviewers at US News pan the Mitsubishi Outlander. They give a positive nod to roomy seats and good mileage but then they go after a noisy and under-powered engine.  They give the Outlander Sport some kudos for roomy back seat but take it away when talking about cargo space.  @USNewsCars.

Left Lane News

The Left Lane review is all over the place.  They like the styling and mileage but knock it cargo room, engine power and handling but then go on to say that it is worth a look.  @LeftLaneNews.

AutoTrader

The AutoTrader review is positive but generally full of weird fruit metaphors. @AutoTrader_com.

Edmunds

Edmunds isn’t a bit fan of the Outlander Sport.  They keep comparing it to other models that cost more and don’t get the great mileage.  They think it is fun to drive. @Edmunds.

AutoWeek

The AutoWeek review makes ZERO sense.  They are comparing it to the Tiguan. This is a great priced Mitsubishi.  Hello.  It is not a German car with the German price.  @AutoWeek.

The Jeep Patriot hit the #5 spot in our Top Ten for Small SUVs for mileage and price.  This is not a high end car.  It comes with a low price and terrific mileage.  If you are looking for something different then upgrade or look at other models.  The Jeep Patriot is a cool car for what it is.  It comes with a six-speed automatic, entry level stereo with four speakers but if price is the issue stick to the base model.  Don’t know if this is the car you want to spend a lot of money upgrading.

  • 4 cylinder/2.0-liter engine
    • Manual 5-spd transmission/FWD – 23 city / 26 combined / 30 highway MPG

Editors Summary of All Reviews

We reviewed five reviews about the Jeep Patriot and almost all of them aren’t seeing the Jeep Patriot for what it is.  It is a solid, low priced small SUV.  There is nothing to love in terms of handling, amenities or luxury.  If you want a low priced, solid, great gas mileage small SUV and you don’t mind a basic interior then the Jeep Patriot is a car to consider.

US News

The reviewers are saying the like the Jeep Patriot’s low base price but are not crazy about the acceleration.  They get a picky about interior and cargo space. We say, “get back into the real world.”  The Jeep Patriot is a four cylinder Jeep that can drive down the highway, to the store or off road.  We’re not racing Baja or going to the opera.  @USNewsCars.

AutoTrader

AutoTrader’s review is snarky.  The Jeep Patriot is what it is.  It gets you from Point A to Point B with terrific mileage and an amazing low cost.  Enough with comparing it to the Encore, Escape or other higher priced small SUV models. @AutoTrader_com.

Consumer Guide

The Consumer Guide Reviewers like the folks from AutoTrader don’t really get the Jeep Patriot.  This Jeep is an all-purpose get around town or light camping car.  It isn’t anything but what it is.  Consumer Guide reviewers wind up recommending other cars that cost 25% more.  I wish I had a Patriot when I bought my first car.  @CGAutomotive.

Edmunds

If you’ve a $15,000 budget then the Patriot is a car to consider.   It doesn’t have a lot of bells and whistles but it does the job, gets terrific mileage and can take you off road a little ways. @Edmunds.

Left Lane News

Left Lane News is clear that The Jeep Patriot is what it is – a low cost, small SUV, that you can take off-road, gets great gas mileage and comes with a low price tag.  Everything else is like comparing a potato to an orange. @LeftLaneNews.

Coming in at #6 in our rankings of Top Ten of Small SUVs for mileage and price the Ford Escape is a terrific all around small SUV.  With its 1.6-liter EcoBoost engine, 26 combined MPG, and $36,870 price it deserves your attention.   The Escape is a well-made small SUV that is fun to drive.  A tad noisy.  Its 26 combined MPG is 3 MPG less than our leader the Mazda CX – 5.  Shoppers need to decide on the tradeoffs between price, MPG, and luxury.  The eco-boost engine is a big plus if you are willing to pay for it.

Editors Summary of All Reviews

The US News, AutoTrader, Edmunds, and Kelley Blue Reviews were all positive.  Read the reviews and you’ll quick see that the Ford EcoBoost engine, MPG, great interior make the Ford Escape a must try small SUV.  It is pricey but we think well worth it if it fits your budget.

US News

US News loves the Escape’s EcoBoost engines, its handling, rooming back seat but marks down its infotainment system.  Two big pluses are its rear view camera and the Sync systems which come standard.   The Escape drives like a car.  Drive it and you know it immediately.  There is no SUV drift or squish. @USNewsCars.

AutoTrader

AutoTrader loves the Escape.  Is it because Ford is a big advertiser? Or does this small SUV deserve the rating?.  Probably a little of both.  The Escape looks good, handles well, and is fun.  AutoTrader is goo-goo over Ford’s technology for rear cargo door and self-parallel parking capabilities.  @AutoTrader_com.

Edmunds

Edmunds, like AutoTrader, loves the Escape.  They praise the power, driving experience, interior and the renowned Ford technology. @Edmunds.

Kelley Blue Book

Kelley Blue Book lines up with Edmunds and AutoTrader in terms of praise for the Escape.  They did suggest to shoppers that it is a bit pricey and interior room less than ideal.  @KelleyBlueBook.

Editors Summary of All Reviews

The US News, Edmunds, Kelley Blue, Consumer Guide and Automobile Magazine Reviews were all OK.  Nobody loves the Honda CR-V.  We could only agree and think our #7 Small SUVs price and mileage ranking out 10 is fair.

US News

The reviewer at US News likes the CR-V because of its interior room, storage, and rear view camera.  But their praise is diminished by their downgrading its limited engine options.  This car, for the reviewers at US News, doesn’t have enough power. But then they went ahead ranked it 1 out of 22 in their own rankings of Affordable Compact SUVs. Like most Honda models, the reviewers at US News like the standard Honda bells and whistles such as backup camera, Bluetooth, and Pandora link. @USNewsCars.

Edmunds

Edmunds’ reviewers like the CR-V because of MPG, interior room, features, and thoughtful engineering.  They make it top choice among small SUVs. @Edmunds.

Kelley Blue Book

Kelley Blue Book’s review is old french fries left over from “kids gone wild” backseat eat-a-thon.  We didn’t find the review valuable. @KelleyBlueBook.

Consumer Guide

We liked the Consumer Guide review of CR-V because it was simply written and talked about the things normal people think about cars: comfort, passenger room, cargo space, and price. @CGAutomotive.

Automobile Magazine

Automobile Magazine says it, “pretty unbeatable.”  Lower the price and increase the mileage and it would have been in our top three ranking. @AutoMobileMag.

The Toyota RAV4 ranked 8 out 10 small SUVs for mileage and price.  Its 26 MPG and $23,300 put it close to the bottom. We wondered to ourselves, “Did our rating system fail?  This is a Toyota.”  But read all the reviews and you’ll see we were right on the money putting it in the #8 spot in our Top Ten Small SUVs price and mileage rankings.   Lots of cargo space is the RAV4’s big positive.  In our opinion that’s like saying, “you’re nice.”

Editors Summary of All Reviews

Out of six reviews, the RAV 4 was panned by five.  It is only Popular Mechanics that gave the thumbs up. The US News, Edmunds, Kelley Blue, Consumer Guide and Automobile Magazine Reviews were all OK.  Nobody really stands up for the Honda CR-V.  We could only agree and think that its 7 out 10 Small SUVs price and mileage ranking is fair.

US News

US News isn’t going to give the Toyota or almost any other major brand a terrible review and they certainly didn’t here.   They justifiably liked the Toyota RAV 4 because of its great ride and cargo space.  I do not understand the rap on power.  High mileage in a small SUV means a deficit of power.   But when US News compares the RAV 4 to the Volkswagen Tiguan they are smoking something legal in Colorado.  @USNewsCars.

Kelley Blue Book

Kelley Blue Book kicked the RAV’s review by comparing its MPG to the Mazda CX-5 and Subaru Forester. Overall Kelley Blue Book surprised us with a generally negative review.  @KelleyBlueBook.

Left Lane News

Left Lane News agreed with Kelley Blue Book and kicked the RAV’s butt.  @LeftLaneNews.

Edmunds

It is said that “kindness can kill.”  Edmunds killed the RAV 4 with its kind review.  Read between the lines and the Edmunds says the RAV doesn’t get a second look.  @Edmunds.

AutoBlog

If “three is a crowd” then “four becomes a mob.” AutoBlog joined up with Edmunds, Left Lane News, and Kelley Blue Book to softly trash the RAV 4. @TheRealAutoBlog.

Popular Mechanics

The reviewers at Popular Mechanics must know something the rest of reviewers don’t because they like the RAV 4.  They call it sporty, fun, and great looking. @PopMech.

US News thinks the Jeep Compass is a loser.  The reviewer can’t find anything positive to say and points out how the Compass doesn’t stand up to any competitors.  We wonder what they are talking about when you consider PRICE.  The Compass is under $20,000.  @USNewsCars.

AutoTrader

AutoTrader’s praise was damming at best.  The 2014 Jeep Compass according to the reviewers at AutoTrader lags behind its peers. @AutoTrader_com.

AutoWeek

AutoWeek’s review was worse than AutoTrader’s review.  They beat up on the Compass.  @AutoWeek.

Edmunds

Edmunds wasn’t any kinder to the Jeep Compass.  @Edmunds.

Kelley Blue Book

In poker five of a kind is a winning hand.  Five bad reviews means you lost.  @KelleyBlueBook.

The SX is fitted with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four. While Kia lists a manual transmission for the base Sportage for 2014, they’re likely to be as rare as Unicorns.

What Makes This Particular KIA Sportage a Great Deal?

This specific KIA Sportage comes with a $1,500 coupon discount off MSRP plus all other dealer and manufacturer savings and rebates.  As you and every car buyer knows it’s all the other hidden costs that jack up the final price.  Hold on!  This KIA Sportage is one of a kind because our dealer partner has added another $2,200 in additional coupons.  When you total the coupon savings up you have $4,100 in savings.  Your final deal beats TrueCar and everyone else on the final deal.  The sweetener on this KIA Sportage is that the dealer knows his competition and he is willing to seriously negotiate.

Editors Summary of All Reviews

Five bad reviews.  Nobody has anything positive to say about the Sportage.  We think most of the reviewers found someone to bully. The Sportage is NOT the top of the class but it has a GREAT price.  Reviewers are often dealing with an idealized world of customers who have unlimited budget and options.  The reality is money is tight and if your budget matches the Sportage and you like the MPG this car will get the job done.  It is by no means a great car.  It is flat out a great value for the money.

US News

The US News reviewer killed the Kia Sportage with one line…”tight back seat.” Who on God’s earth wants a car that costs $21,600 with a tight back seat.  They bury it with harsh ride and less cargo space than rivals.  @USNewsCars.

AutoTrader

The AutoTrader reviews kill the Sportage with kindness by saying it is nimble but cramped. @AutoTrader_com.

Consumer Guide

Consumer Guide joins the Sportage firing squad by pointing out the Kia’s strong warranty.   @CGAutomotive.

Kelley Blue Book

Kelley Blue Book pounds the final three nails in the Sportage coffin with its slam on space, ride comfort and visibility.  Who wants a car that has a harsh ride, no room and no visibility?  @KelleyBlueBook.
