The 4 Best Small SUVs

analyzed reviews from the top automotive research websites, to help you find the best small SUV on the market.

In New Jersey, we have to deal with some pretty heavy winter snow on highways as well as dense local streets, which is why small SUVs are a great option to stay safe. Sure everyone would like a bulky Hummer H2 to conquer frozen terrain, but does anyone enjoy parallel parking that thing?

By analyzing the top small SUV reviews we’ve come to the conclusion that the 2014 Mazda CX-5, the 2014 Subaru Crosstrek, the 2014 Buick Encore, and the 2014 Jeep Patriot are the best choice for NJ residents looking for a reliable car this winter. We also made sure to include coupon savings from NJ Car Coupon to help you pay less when buying any of these cars at one of our partner NJ dealerships.

1. 2014 Mazda CX-5

Editors Summary of Critic Reviews

We analyzed six Mazda CX-5 reviews and it is clear that this car deserves our #1 rating.  The Mazda CX-5 has it all.  Keep in mind it is what it is – a terrific modestly priced high mileage small SUV.  It is not a big SUV.  It is not a luxury SUV.  But it is a terrific small SUV that gets top mileage for a great price.

US News

Likes the CX-5 handling. They don’t give enough credit for its category leading MPG.  Their biggest knock is power on hills but hey, if you live in the mountains this is NOT the car for you. US News talks about the basic interior but for $21,395 you aren’t buying luxury.  This is a great car for families on a budget.

Kelley Blue Book

Kelley Blue Book agrees with US News that the CX-5 handling is terrific which makes it fun to drive.  KBB gives the CX-5 credit for its category leading MPG win.

Editors Summary of Reviews

We analysed six reviews of the Subaru CrossTrek and in our opinion this car comes out a winner.  We ranked it #2 in our Small SUV Mileage Top Ten and these reviewers seem to agree.

US News

US News knocks this #2 rated small SUV MPG leader because it has less room than rivals and its under-powered engine. We say to the reviewers “give me a break.”  It has standard AWD, handles well, and has great fuel economy.  This isn’t a Denali with 8 cylinders or a 6 cylinder Ford Explorer.  It is a small SUV with great mileage.  Stop dribbling words and platitudes about this small SUV’s lack of a nuclear engine, low radiation emission, proton injected steering.  This is a great car.

AutoTrader

The AutoTrader review is a bit confusing in that it wanders into talking about the Impreza Hatchback, Forester or Outback. Overall they like the Subaru CrossTrek. We wish reviewers talked like normal people.  Just say it, “Hey we like this Crosstrek when you are talking cost, MPG and overall package. No package is perfect but what is.” Except the fantasy car in reviewers heads.

Editors Summary of Expert Auto Reviews

We assessed five reviews of the 2014 Buick Encore and in our opinion this car comes out a top pick.  We ranked it #3 in our Small SUV Price and Mileage Top Ten and these reviewers concur.  All the reviewers agree that for the price, mileage and interior comfort the Encore is a winner.  A couple of reviewers knocked the cargo space.  We say, “The Encore is not for a big family going on long trips.”  Don’t try to over-stuff your family into the small SUV Encore.  If you want a bigger cargo space then consider the Enclave.  If you like price, value, MPG and comfort we think you’ll LOVE the Encore.

Edmunds

Edmunds, like everyone else, likes how the Encore looks and its top ranked MPG.   For some reason Edmunds recommends its competitors like the Ford Escape for road trips.   Jeez, we recommend the opposite because the Ford Escape is noisy.  No comparison with the Encore.  If you have a big family then think about the Enclave which is super luxurious but nasty on mileage.  Quiet as a cougar on a night stalk.

Automobile Magazine

Automobile Magazine likes the Encore price and value.  They agree with Edmunds about space compared to the Escape.  We think there are trade-offs but the Encore comes out ahead.

Editors Summary of Reviews

We compared five reviews of the Jeep Patriot and have decided that this car should be recognized.  We ranked it #4 in our Small SUV Price and Mileage Top Ten and these reviewers concur.  All the reviewers agree that the price, off-road capability, and interior comfort make this a choice worth considering.  It wasn’t praised for its acceleration or its lack of cargo space, but neither are most compact SUVs.  Have a large family? Get a larger SUV.  Going on a hike with your dog? This is for you! If you like price, value, and comfort we think the Patriot will be a perfect fit.

Edmunds

Edmunds gives the 2014 Jeep Patriot a C rating, which means they find it to be an “average” compact SUV. Like other reviews, they claim it has sluggish acceleration and that it has limited cargo space. But they list as a pro that it has a “few clever features” without going into what features they are. What kind of review is that? Don’t be fooled by “average” reviews, this is definitely a vehicle worth considering.

Kelley Blue Book

KBB likes that the Patriot is still an SUV capable of being shipped out with manual transmission.  They also like that it is a budget vehicle that performs, for good reason. Who doesn’t like getting the best bang for your buck?
